When Jesus was on earth, he often had conflict with the Pharisees, religious leaders of the time. The Pharisees had a long list of rules about how to follow their religion. For example, they were upset when Jesus healed someone on the Sabbath which sounds ridiculous.
After one such confrontation, which of course the Pharisees ended up looking bad, they were complaining among themselves about Jesus. Nicodemus spoke up saying that they should hear Jesus first before condemning him. The Pharisees repeated a “truism” that no prophet could come from Galilee. All of this is recorded in John 7.
For my purposes here, a truism is something accepted as true but perhaps is not true.
But wait. They overlooked something important. Perhaps you have heard the passage from Isaiah 9 about- Unto to Us A Son Is Given. He shall be called Mighty God, Prince of Peace. It is in the famous Handel’s Messiah and other songs.
That is a Messianic passage and one the Pharisees should have known. Messianic meaning the promise of the Messiah or Promised One from God.
If we look at the first verse in Isaiah 9, we see this”
“Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan”
In the future he will honor Galilee of the nations. That is then immediately followed by the lines we hear in Handel’s Messiah. The truth is that the connection of Galilee and the Messiah was established in Isaiah 9.
It is so important to search God’s word and not just accept religious traditions or “truisms”. Truth is what is important.
Jesus taught that those who seek to worship God must do so in spirit and in truth.
