What’s In A Name

Names are the first thing we usually learn about someone. People calling us by our name helps us feel connected Parents choose names for babies that have meaning to them.

I have a friend at church named Karen. She is a kind person. When I was growing up, one of my best friends was named Karen. I love spending time with my friends from Burma who are part of the Karen People-different pronunciation Kuhrin.

So when it became popular to use the name Karen as a way to slander women who complain, it bothered me.

The name of our Savior is Jesus. He chose to die on the cross for us out of his love for us. He defeated death for us. When people use his name while swearing, it bothers me.

It is at the name Jesus that all of humanity will one day bow. We read in Philippians 2:

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

The time draws closer to when this will happen. The question is whether we will bow our knee out of gratitude as an act of worship to Jesus or bow our knee realizing Jesus is the Savior we rejected and it’s too late.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. I did not know that people are using the name Karen to slander. What is the meaning of Karen? I am so glad that Jesus is a name above all others and at the mention of His name great things will happen to you. Blessings 🙌

      1. I haven’t heard that, yet. I have a good friend named Karen. I know a lot of words that we used to use with a pure meaning have different meanings now. So sad.

  2. I have a suspicion that “Slander” actually started due to an incident with someone actually named Karen. If a Peggy had started it, people would use that. As for Jesus, I totally agree with you! I am not sure I like those who name their children Jesus but with a different pronunciation..”Hay Zeus”.

  3. How beautiful is the name of Jesus. I love that song and His name. I have a cousin named Karen. She has been a teacher for over 20 years and currently teaches math.
