The paradox for us is that eternal life begins the moment we trust Jesus as our Savior. It does not begin when we die and go to heaven. It begins in this earthly life when we come to trust in Jesus. However, we are still in this world full of problems. We trudge along in this life knowing there is something far better ahead for us.
We journey along in this life hoping to being others with us. We journey along in this life looking forward to our eternal home and yet still experience the troubles of this life. Hebrews 11 puts it this way:
All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
I love this song For All My Life by Taya. It beautifully expresses our experience in this earthly life.
