True Lasting Legacy

For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you. 1 Peter 1:24-25

Legacy is something that I have thought about at times. I am at the age that I have more yesterdays in this life than tomorrows. Beyond this current generation and the people who know me, there won’t be a lasting legacy from me in this life. Even my blog won’t leave much of a legacy. On days I skip posting for whatever reason, the views plummet.

Yes, there are people who are remembered well beyond their lifetimes, good, bad, and nefarious. But they are the rare exceptions in life. For every Charles Spurgeon, a famous preacher of the 1800s, there are countless millions over the past two thousand years who have proclaimed Jesus to their generation in their location who do not have a legacy in this life.

But it is the temporary nature of our lives that is exactly why we should focus on what we are doing in the here and now when it comes to serving Jesus. Say what??? Bear with me.

Our true legacies are not in this life, this temporary world. Out true legacies are in eternity with Jesus. How we live, how we treat others, how we share Christ in this life, will carry over into eternity.

Hebrews 6:10 says:

God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them

God remembers everything we do. He won’t forget the love we show him by sharing his love in this life. That is why Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-20:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

He said that right after talking about God the Father rewarding us.

This life is fleeting, so best not to worry about a legacy here. It is eternity that matters most and in God’s hands and because God remembers EVERYTHING we do for him in the here and now, every act of love in his name, every time we help his people, every time we share Jesus with others, every blog post we write to glorify him, what we do in the here and now really mattters.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
