Still Need You- A Song Written By A Sister for Her Brother

May is Mental Health Awareness Month so I will be posting about mental health issues at times this month.

On the show American Idol, one teen girl who made the top ten and is doing great is Haven. Haven’s older brother struggled with depression-severe depression. She wrote a song that she performed on American Idol titled Still Need You. From the heart of a little sister to her big brother.

Their parents stayed up in the night to monitor her older brother. They shared the story publicly. The reason her parents stayed up him was out of concern he might harm himself. That is the meaning behind Haven’s song- she wants her brother to stay.

Family support can be so helpful for those who struggle with depression, anxiety or other mental health issues. But of course, family can also make things worse.

For me, my focus is on chosen family. By chosen family I am referring to my friends I am closest with at church. They are the people I look to. Ultimately it is Jesus who I look to and depend on.

As Galatians 6:2 says:

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Let’s remember what the law of Christ is.in John 13:34-35:

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
