Soccer In the Bible?

This morning in my group, one of my young friends invited his friend from school to come with him. His friend is from El Salvador. When I ask my friends what they did yesterday, the young man replied, “I played soccer.” Perfect opening to one of my favorite attention getters. I asked him if he knew soccer is in the bible. Both of the young men’s eyes were big from excitement. They wanted to know where in the bible, so I showed them Philippians 3:14

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Then I smiled as I said, “get it? the goal?” They laughed. It is a fun attention getter to use. But then we talked about the ultimate goal in life is to know Jesus.

Before that brief interaction, my young visitor sat there not looking connected with us or comfortable. After that interaction about soccer being in the bible, his whole demeanor changed..

It is fun to use attention getters. As a teacher, I use them all the time. When sharing my faith, I also use them. So much easier to communicate with people who smile and laugh with me.

Do you use attention getters?

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. Here is, professor,

“To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me on my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father on his throne.”
    Revelation 3:21

      1. Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
        1 Corinthians 9:24
