May Is Mental Health Awareness Month- Depression

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so some of my posts this month will be about mental health. Depression is more than feeling sad about something. I feel sad sometimes when my favorite sports team loses. That is not depression.

Depression symptoms include loss of interest in activities that used to bring joy or interest for us, low self esteem, feeling hopeless and helpless, a feeling of emptiness, sleep disturbance, persistent sadness, and lack of energy.

There is hope for anyone struggling with depression. I know because I struggled with it and got help. Seeking help can start with your doctor or opening up to a friend. As my pastor says, “it’s okay to not be okay, but it’s not okay to stay that way,” meaning if we know we are not okay, we do not need to stay that way. There is help.

I had a head injury as a young man and live with chronic illnesses all of which can have depression as a symptom. I talked with my doctor and got help. I also benefitted from therapy.

Jesus has been my greatest help. Jesus once said in Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Jesus invites us to come to him. We can come to him in prayer to seek his help with depression. Even the faintest prayer will get his attention. We do not need to worry about knowing what to say. We can pray from the heart.

There is hope. Jesus is ever ready to help. Step by step there is hope and healing from depression.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. So important to speak up and get help when your mental health is off! And like you said Jesus is necessary and the most effective part of healing!

  2. There is no greater need today than more honesty about mental problems. People struggle alone many times because of shame for themselves or family members who face this and from cruel people who don’t understand the plights of others facing this. It’s wonderful to have a month dedicated to awareness.
