Yesterday at the coffee shop my friends Alexey and Ruslana joined me and brought their seven year old son David with them. I asked them to bring David because it was his birthday and today is Ruslana’s birthday. Their family has been a blessing for me to get to know and I had a specific purpose in mind, which was to bless David on his birthday.

Alexey and Ruslana originally intended to stay in Ukraine, but one day while explosions were happening in their city, their younger children were throwing up because of the stress and fear. Ruslana called Alexey to tell him about the children, so they decided to leave their home and flee.

It was a simple gift of a set of six matchbox cars and a birthday card for a child that I gave to David. The smile on his face spoke volumes to me. He was content the rest of the time at the coffee shop to play a children’s game on his mother’s phone.

That small act of blessing a seven year old refugee child on his birthday made me think of Jesus with children in Matthew 19:14-15:

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”  When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.

Placing hands on them means he was blessing them. Jesus God the Son was blessing the children.

Children need blessings, I am grateful I could be a small blessing for David.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  4. Showing kindness to this young child will not be forgotten. It made all the difference while living in a strange place far away from the familiar!

    1. Children are resilient but they need to be blessed by adults and most of all by Jesus
