Hebrews 5:7-9 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered  and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him

Jesus was made perfect or complete? How could the perfect Son of God be made perfect? Because he suffered in his earthly life, he can sympathize with us. Hebrews 4:14-16 says

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Because Jesus suffered in his earthly life, we can come to him in prayer knowing that he understands and has sympathy for us. We can open up to him in prayer and receive grace and mercy.

While the context of Hebrews is directly dealing with his suffering on the cross, the principle has broader application. Jesus endured many things in his earthly life that we experience. In prayer, we can give those burdens to him such as family problems, grieving, being harassed and more.

This is the main point in my book Jesus Understands Trauma. This is what has meant so much to me in my prayer life as I dealt with Complex PTSD, depression. Jesus not only has the power to help, he understands.

Dear reader, we do not have to deal with our burdens alone. Jesus wants to partner with us and wants us to give our burdens to him. He said so in Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
