It was four years ago this month, during the COVID pandemic, that after months of not being able to go get a haircut, it was time for desperate measures. So I took my beard trimmer and proceeded to use it to try to give myself a buzz cut. The results? Not so spectacular.

I went to the school where my morning Family Literacy Class met at the time. As I was teaching, one of the mothers looked at me with my bad haircut, shook her head while smiling, walked over to a drawer and got a pair of scissors and fixed my haircut while I was teaching.

As I teach, my hope is that my students feel comfortable asking questions and part of that is using humor sometimes self deprecating humor. The reason is that I want them to feel they can talk with me. It is more than about learning English. They might have questions about life here. If they need help, I want them to feel they can ask me.

The theme of my post Sunday about God Being Approachable is on my mind this week. The writer of Hebrews in the bible wrote in Hebrews 4:14-16:

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Jesus understands what we experience in this life because he lived an earthly life, so can empathize with us. He wants us to come to him so we can receive grace and mercy. He is approachable.

By the way, I am not planning to become a barber anytime soon.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. I like your theme this week- God is approachable 🙂

  2. When I cut my young son’s hair, many years ago, then took him to a barber to fix my mess, the barber asked, “So young man, you found mom’s scissors.” I sat quietly by without saying a word.

I am so glad our heavenly Father is not only approachable but seeks us to come to him.

    1. Lol- I wonder what your son was thinking
Amen- He Seeks us to invite us to him what a wonderful truth

  3. My latest hairdo was a personal hack too – a process over several weeks of it becoming shorter and shorter. Not sure what I can do except shave it off now! But I like it well enough and it is very easy to maintain.

I love God’s wisdom in sending Jesus in human flesh – I have always found Jesus the easiest part of the Trinity to relate to, and yes, extremely approachable and accessible. Lovely post

    1. Shorter hair is so easy to take care of

  4. You’re doing a really kind thing by helping them start their new life.

    1. Thank you my fellow Jedi. It is my privilege to help them 🙂

      1. You’re very welcome and I am sure they really appreciate your help.

  5. Amen. When anyone questions the relevance of Christ’s walk among us, these verses from Hebrews remind us that He walked the same steps as man. He sidestepped every angle of the enemy’s darkness, and His forgiving light at the Cross will pay for our frequent missteps.

    1. Amen- Jesus is our Sympathetic High Priest

  6. Your students are definitely comfortable with you for one of them to feel comfortable cutting your hair in class. That was nice.

    1. It was a fun moment I will never forget 🙂
