Due to the freeze on new refugees coming into the country, my morning Refugee Welcome Class will end after the next group of students. I got the official word yesterday. Just another example of how life can suddenly change. It will be a loss of income for me, but I trust God will supply.

When I first heard the news, even though I suspected it would, it hit hard at first. My first thought was, “at my age this is the last thing I need.” But then I remembered Isaiah 46:4-“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”

So what was a boy to do yesterday after receiving disappointing news? I went to my coffee shop, caught up on blogging, ate a cheeseburger, and prayed to give it to Jesus.

My other classes I teach at the college will continue, but I will miss being the first teacher refugees have when they come to America, helping them with knowing basics about life here, and showing them the love of Jesus.

My concern was also the impact it can have on my ministry among the refugees and immigrants in my community. But part of ministry whether on a ministry trip to another country or reaching out here is remembering the two word phrase emphasized during my training for my first trip to Romania in 1997- Be Flexible.

God is fully able to open new ways for me to continue sharing and showing the love of Jesus.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  9. “Being flexible” is a worthy attitude in the midst of change. When I was teaching middle school in Columbus, this phrase meant even more to keeping my classroom as even keel as possible.
