As a boy of ten to twelve years of age, I had a misunderstanding about life insurance. Whenever a commercial came on TV for life insurance, my thought was what good does it do because the person who bought it still dies. As I got older, I realized it was to help loved ones after the person died.

As a new Christian and in my early walk with Jesus, I had the faulty view of what salvation meant. I only thought about it in the “eternal life insurance” sense meaning believe in Jesus and go to heaven being saved from going to hell. While that is part of it and an important part, it is a very limiting understanding.
The truth of Ephesians 2:4-6 gives a fuller understanding.
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved”
Our eternal life begins the moment we trust in Jesus as our Savior. God makes us alive in Jesus. Death means separation. Physical death is when our souls separate from our physical bodies. Spiritual death is us being separated from God because of our sin. God making us alive in Jesus means we are no longer separated from God.
Coming to trust in Jesus is the start of our eternal life, eternal journey, with Jesus, with God. We fully realize it when we die and enter into his presence in heaven, but it begins when we trust in Jesus.
When Jesus said that he came that we may have life and have it abundantly, he was not only speaking of eternity in heaven. He was also speaking of it in this life being able to experience his presence in this life as we go through all of the ups and downs. He is Immanuel, God with us, now and forever.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
