I can’t believe it has already been four years since I met a Brazilian mom who exemplified devotion.

August 2014 to May 2014 the university where I live had about 200 students from Brazil come to study for one year. It was Thanksgiving week in 2014 that a young woman, Marian, who was one of the students from Brazil in the group I had lunches with that school year, told me her mom was coming. Marian wanted to know how to meet her mom at the airport. She asked me about it the Friday before Thanksgiving. The timing of the arrival fit great with my schedule, so I told Marian I would take her to the airport to meet her mom the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

We went to the airport to pick up Magda, Marian’s mom, Her mom was hungry, so I took them to a buffet restaurant for lunch. During lunch I found out that Magda had to leave and go back to Brazil that Saturday. It would only be a four day visit.

During her visit, she got to meet some of Marian’s friends, cook a dinner for Marian, some of her friends, and me and go to a movie with us, have a birthday lunch the Friday after Thanksgiving, and have a tour of the university driving around it.

Saturday morning came and it was time to go back to the airport. I took Marian and her mom Magda to the airport. We were sitting in the small cafeteria of the small airport when Magda decided it was time to say something. She took Marian’s hand and my hand. She looked at me and said, “Matt she is your daughter here, Please help Marian.” That began a wonderful friendship.

What really struck me about Magda’s trip was how devoted she is to her daughter. She flew internationally probably about 20 hours to get here and 20 hours to get back home only to spend four days with her daughter who was going to university here and living away from home for the first time. It wasn’t a helicopter mom thing. It was a mom wanting to see her daughter, spend time with her, and check on how she is doing.

The one word that came to my mind was DEVOTION.

Think about how devoted God is to us. Think about the lengths God went to for us. He is so devoted to us that he sent his one and only son Jesus to be our Savior. Even when we are not faithful, he stays devoted to us.

Jesus promised in John 14:

I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”

Magda traveled a total of about 40 hours in less than a week just to spend four days with her daughter.

Jesus will come to us at any minute any time. In fact, he is always with us. Jesus is devoted to us.

God’s devotion to us is what Christmas is really all about.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
