I watched a wonderful video on youtube about a woman chained down by words spoken to her over the years and her own thoughts about herself. It is something I can certainly relate to. Growing up with messages spoken to you about how messed up you are, or being harassed at school with messages about how worthless you are can stay with a person.
Actions speak louder than words. A classic example for me was my 9th grade promotion ceremony. I rejoice over seeing families celebrate milestones in the lives of their children whether it is being promoted out of pre-school, being promoted out of elementary school, being promoted out of middle school or graduating high school. Those moments are important to children. For me my 9th grade promotion only served to underscore how little I was valued by my parents. No one came from my family. It was like it was no big deal. Such actions by families speak even louder than taunting or ridiculing words.
When someone is already down in life, it seems that others are just too eager to join in and pounce on like the game of dog pile. Then it is too easy to believe the negative messages and repeat them to yourself over and over again.
Until the light comes. Jesus said in John 8:
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
The interesting thing is that Jesus himself is the truth as he said in John 14:
“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.”
Jesus is THE truth. He is the one who came to set us free including the chains of negative messages whether spoken to us by others or ones we tell ourselves.
When those words come from Jesus, “I love you,” “I cherish you.” and “You are important to me” and the one that really gets me, “I love you so much that I left heaven to die for you,” they can free us.
Jesus overcame the world for us. In John 16 Jesus proclaimed:
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
He has overcome everything for us which includes all of the negative stuff others have spoken over us to keep us down and the negative garbage we run through our minds over and over again.
God values us as his creation. He wants relationship with us as father and child. His love for us is so immense that words cannot adequately describe the depths of his love for us.
Picture yourself as you are chained down from all the garbage and then picture Jesus saying:
I love you
You are important to me
I came to die for you
I loved this video so much that I wanted to share it with you. My hope is that it blesses you as much as it blessed me or even more.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
