In August 2014, only four and a half years ago, the group of terrorists Daesh came into the Sinjar region of Iraq and committed a terrible genocide against the Yazidi people. That was just the latest genocide against the Yazidi people who have experienced oppression for centuries.

My home city of Lincoln Nebraska has the largest number of Yazidi people in North America. Many of them have been my students. I have been in their homes and listened as they shared their stories. Yesterday I was SO PROUD of my Yazidi friends.

My Yazidi friends, many of whom fled the genocide not too long ago, wanted to support their fellow Nebraskans devastated by the flooding here. They collected food and supplies and delivered them to one of the cities terribly affected by the flooding. They delivered four trailers of food and supplies.

To put that into perspective, my Yazidi friends who suffered atrocities and who are striving to make new lives in America which means working hard physical labor jobs, learning English, and trying to make sense out of their new country, got together to help victims of the flooding here.

They came here as refugees. They appreciate the freedom they have here and the help  they have been given. They wanted to give back, so they organized an effort to help people they have never met who are devastated by the terrible flooding here.

This was a story I had to share because I am proud of them and also because refugees have been maligned in some circles.

Great work my Yazidi friends!!! I am very proud of you!!!

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. Wonderful to see this. I remember the Yazidi students in your class when I volunteered 🙂

  2. Wow! This is truly an example of compassion and gratitude. Thank you for sharing these stories. Have you ever considered compiling these stories and put them in a book? I am sure it will be a success. These are the stories that will help to encourage others in similar situation and to encourage others who can help.

    1. I hadn’t thought of it but will. Thank you
