In August 2010, we had a lunch at my church for my young friends from China and Vietnam to meet college students from my church. Our chef for the day was Alex a young man from China. He is an excellent cook.
I went to the church kitchen where Alex was cooking some delicious food. I decided to help crack open eggs. On my first attempt, I cracked the egg open but missed the bowl dropping the raw egg on the counter. My friends and I laughed. Alex kicked me out of the kitchen. Each time I peeked in, I was told to leave as we all laughed.
Those are the kind of moments that help build friendships. The moments that people can laugh and then have fond memories.Our lunch was a fun time of people getting to know each other.
One of the things Jesus did after his resurrection was to eat breakfast with his disciples. We read in John 21:
“Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.”
Jesus often ate with people visiting them in their homes. He changed people’s lives when he did so. Matthew the tax collector is a great example. In Matthew 9 we read:
“While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
The self righteous Pharisees, religious leaders, judged Jesus for visiting the home of a tax collector and eating with him. I love Jesus’s response:
“On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Jesus called them out on their self righteous judgement. It changed Matthew’s life when Jesus came to his home to eat. Matthew went on to become one of Jesus’s disciples and one of the 12 apostles who went out the start the church.
Sharing meals is wonderful for friendship. I wonder which of my little sister bloggers I should cook for in their homes? Hmmm
