Sustaining a blog? What do I mean by sustaining a blog?

Blogging tips are great to attract people to our blogs. Interacting with other bloggers helps to attract people to our blogs. Blogging Awards are nice for networking with other bloggers. I participate in some because I remember how I felt as a new blogger when someone nominated me for a Blogging Award. Some of them I participate in mostly as a way to pay it forward.

But what is sustaining a blog about?

I am talking about Original Content.

Original Content is the post the blogger has written themselves about any topic. Original Content is when a blogger expresses their voice.

I follow a variety of blogs because I have eclectic interests. Some bloggers I follow because they share the same faith I have as a Christian. Some bloggers I follow because they write about a topic of interest of mine such as living with chronic illness or other cultures. Some bloggers I follow because I like people with quirky senses of humor. But what keeps me coming back to their blogs as diverse in topics and styles as they are comes down to one thing- Original Content. I enjoy their writing.

I wanted to share this today for new bloggers to encourage them to focus on expressing their voice, their style, in their writing. Yes, participate in Blogging Awards for fun and networking. Yes get interactive with fellow bloggers. But don’t get so focused on those that you forget why you started your blog in the first place- to express your voice in whatever your interests are.

Also give yourself permission to try new ways or styles of expressing your voice. Give yourself permission to explore varied interests. When my blog first started, I only wrote basically bible lessons, but then I felt I should begin to share about my experiences with other cultures too. Then I explored sharing posts about living with chronic illness and depression. Some of my posts are humorous, some are serious, and some are a mix.

Remember to be consistent whether you post once a week, twice a week, every day etc.

Give yourself permission to experiment and explore to see what fits you for blogging style, but please keep focus on Original Content to share your voice.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  10. Excellent advice! Totally agree with the original content. The awards are fun and gives the reader a chance to get to know the blogger a little more. Many of the questions in awards are about things we normally to not write about.

And the interaction with others to me is vital. Who knew a year ago that my fellow bloggers would want to join a prayer group….it’s because we have grown to care for one another through our interactions.

    Great post!

    1. The awards are okay. My main point is not to overdo them at the loss of original content because that is what will keep an audience

  11. Great points! I have been writing and blogging for a year (how the time flies). For new bloggers, be patient as you find your voice, be timely with your scheduled posts, and be engaged with bloggers whom you feel connected with.
