Jesus led me to a wonderful ministry of teaching and helping people from diverse countries and cultures. They are an array of beautiful colors created by God in his majestic artistry. God loves all people of all races so much that he sent Jesus to die for all of us.
I have been in their homes. I have heard their stories of what they have been through in their home countries and also in America.
For the ones who are refugees, their stories include being victimized by those in authority. The Karen People of Burma were afraid to go outside the refugee camps in Thailand out of fear the Thai police would beat them and take what little money they had. The Sudanese in my city lived in fear of government troops from the north coming to kill them. My Yazidi friends were victimized for centuries by authorities and treated as less than human. The list could go on and on about the experiences of my refugee friends.
When they share their concerns with me, I listen and try to offer comfort and also advice about building their new lives in America. My ministry is based on trying to share the love of Jesus with them while helping them with their lives in their new country the USA.
Now I am faced with knowing what to tell them if they ask me about George Floyd being murdered by police officers in Minneapolis.
What reassurances can I offer them? My city has not had overtly serious problems and the police are professional in how they conduct themselves here. But that is not a 100% guarantee.
What do I tell them? I do not know. I will have to trust what Jesus said in Mark 13:
“Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.”
