Sunday morning my pastor interviewed some teachers who are part of our church to help us understand the needs and concerns of teachers as we start the school year here. It was such a blessing to see the beginning of my church embracing the schools and teachers in my city.

I had already emailed the principal of the school where my morning class meets asking for ways I can help this school year. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, volunteers from the community can not enter the building. My desire is to volunteer in some way after my morning class finishes perhaps three mornings per week.
It has been a blessing to email or message with some of the teachers in the school over the summer. One of them will not be in the building because she will have a baby soon. We have been emailing since I let her know I am praying for her and her baby.
Today we will interview the young woman who I hope will be my new assistant for the year. This week I will go prepare my classroom. It is coming soon. Each year at this time, I am excited to return to the classroom. I am looking forward to it this year, but there is a hint of caution in my mind to be careful regarding the virus. So I will wear a mask as I teach, keep hand sanitizer with me, and also wash my hands.
Mostly though, what is on my mind is the opportunity to show the love, kindness, and understanding of Jesus to those I interact with in the school. My desire is to be a source of encouragement. In essence my desire is to be a light.
I don’t think of the school as a dark place, but this song expresses my sentiment.
