As a child when I would visit my grandparents, my grandfather watched two things on TV, baseball and Billy Graham meetings.
Later as a young man thinking of going into ministry whenever Billy Graham spoke on TV, I would be glued to the TV. That happened one time at a church single’s group meeting. Everyone else was playing games, but the TV was on for a Billy Graham crusade. I watched the whole thing tuning out everything around me.
My first semester at bible college in Minneapolis, I got a job at Billy Graham’s World Headquarters. My job was as a part-time janitor and for the first two months I cleaned the area where Billy Graham’s office was. When I would clean his office, I would take a few minutes to sit on the sofa in his office and pray for him and his crusades.
One day in early December when I got to work after classes, I found out there was an employee Christmas party in the cafeteria. I went there and Billy Graham was there meeting the employees.
I went up to him with the awe a young man has when meeting a personal hero. He reached out to shake my hand. We shook hands and I told him, “I am a student at North Central studying to be a pastor. I have wanted to meet you for a long time.”
He put a hand on my shoulder, looked me in the eyes and said, “Well it’s a pleasure to meet you.” It was a moment I will never forget. I could sense the Holy Spirit as we chatted briefly.
That was the first time Jesus allowed me to meet someone whose books and ministry impacted me. There have been others.
The amusing rest of the story was that due to my not being able to work the machines such as the buffer, I ended up losing that part-time job. I had been a successful sales rep only months before when I was still living in my city before I left for school, but I failed as a janitor. I have so much respect for janitors who can handle those tricky machines.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
God kept you there long enough to meet brother Billy! The closest I’ve come to something like this was seeing Bill and Gloria Gaither at a restaurant. I walked over and said hello. They were kind about being interrupted and noticed by several people.
Yep I was there just long enough lol
Ahh that’s really neat you were able to meet Billy Graham from that work experience!❤️thanks for sharing Matt!! Hope you are well today!!
We have snow here from overnight , do you?
We had a little yesterday. Supposedly we will get a big snow Monday
Ya same here, actually snow on Monday and Tuesday…we shall see!
That’s cool. I volunteered with Operation Christmas Child which was started by Franklin Graham, Billy’s son….but never met him.
Operation Christmas Child is a wonderful outreach
I went to a Billy Graham Evangelistic Rally when I was a youth; it was an amazing experience! Currently, I am reading the book “Through My Father’s Eyes” that Franklin wrote about his father, Billy Graham. It’s wonderful that your job lasted long enough to speak with him!
That would be amazing to be at one of his rallies back in the day
Thank you for sharing your experience brother Matt. It does make me feel like I know a little more about you now….on a deeper level…..
Take care and hugssssssssss for you🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸😍😍😍😍😍
Hugs for you too 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Cool story!
Thank you
It’s nice to meet one of your heroes through your eyes. You are one of mine 🙂
Thank you little sister 🤗
Great story, Matt. I have great respect for the janitors and cleaners also. I know I could not make a living as one – too weak. 🙂
🤗
Thank you for sharing your story – wooo, hobnobbing with the big-guys! – but thank you for sharing that video of Billy Graham’s message. The message really does not change. May we be emboldened to share it.
The message is the most important thing
Wonderful story! So cool you got to meet Billy Graham! God bless!
