As a child when I would visit my grandparents, my grandfather watched two things on TV, baseball and Billy Graham meetings.
Later as a young man thinking of going into ministry whenever Billy Graham spoke on TV, I would be glued to the TV. That happened one time at a church single’s group meeting. Everyone else was playing games, but the TV was on for a Billy Graham crusade. I watched the whole thing tuning out everything around me.
My first semester at bible college in Minneapolis, I got a job at Billy Graham’s World Headquarters. My job was as a part-time janitor and for the first two months I cleaned the area where Billy Graham’s office was. When I would clean his office, I would take a few minutes to sit on the sofa in his office and pray for him and his crusades.
One day in early December when I got to work after classes, I found out there was an employee Christmas party in the cafeteria. I went there and Billy Graham was there meeting the employees.
I went up to him with the awe a young man has when meeting a personal hero. He reached out to shake my hand. We shook hands and I told him, “I am a student at North Central studying to be a pastor. I have wanted to meet you for a long time.”
He put a hand on my shoulder, looked me in the eyes and said, “Well it’s a pleasure to meet you.” It was a moment I will never forget. I could sense the Holy Spirit as we chatted briefly.
That was the first time Jesus allowed me to meet someone whose books and ministry impacted me. There have been others.
The amusing rest of the story was that due to my not being able to work the machines such as the buffer, I ended up losing that part-time job. I had been a successful sales rep only months before when I was still living in my city before I left for school, but I failed as a janitor. I have so much respect for janitors who can handle those tricky machines.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
