Yesterday it was my privilege to go to Norfolk Nebraska with my Ukrainian friends Alekseyi and Ruslana, We were part of a group that went there to provide a special Christmas service due to January 6th being the day that Ukraine celebrated Christmas until this year.

I should probably explain that I am one of many people who have lived all our lives in either Lincoln or Omaha the two largest cities in Nebraska. I am also one of those who only knows how to get to places close to the interstate. To go to Norfolk, one has to drive on smaller highways.

Alekeseyi was driving and using GPS but the GPS was giving him directions in Ukrainian, so I had no idea what it was saying. At one point it directed him to turn onto a dirt road. I was sure there had been a mistake. As we were driving down the dirt road, for ten miles, thoughts raced through my mind. Thoughts of if we get lost, I won’t be any help because this is not close to the interstate. Thoughts like what if we end up stuck somewhere like in the horror movies.

At this point, Alicia of forhispurpose.blog is probably laughing at me because she lives off of a dirt road close to a small town in Nebraska.

So when we got back to a paved highway with those green signs telling how far certain towns or small cities are, I felt a sense of relief kind of like, “okay we are heading back to civilization.”

The experience left me thinking about the final journey we all will face one day which is when we die. We do not need to worry about how we will go to heaven because Jesus is the way. He said it in John 14:6

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

He is also the way to follow in this life as he guides us. He knows where our life’s journeys are heading and he is with us every step of the way.

We made it to our destination and had a wonderful time sharing with our Ukrainian friends in Norfolk. We plan to return, but perhaps next time we will use GPS on my phone and I will take care of getting there. 🙂

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. It is so important to really know where you are going and not rely on GPS. I have been with others following GPS not good directions and ended on a dead end road, in a driveway. Although I knew how to go but GPS was the trusted source for directions. Best to rely on the most reliable source. (Seems like a parable for the Holy S[irit interpreting the Bible).

    1. The Holy Spirit is an awesome guide

  2. Crazy that it had you take a dirt road, I agree you better operate the GPS next time!!😂

I like how you tied this to our inevitable journey to Heaven and not worrying in how we’ll get there, as Jesus already has that part figured out!!

    1. I definitely want to operate the GPS next time lol
Schools are canceled here because of the snow storm coming. But I think out there you won’t get much snow

      1. We had school canceled today too..supposed to snow a few inches and have wind gusts. Praying for those who have to go out and about!

      2. Will you go outside and play with the animals in the snow?

      3. Ya I just did outdoor animal chores and hung out with my goats!!

      4. How about the deer and the antelopes?

      5. lol nope!! Probably could’ve hung out with the coyotes last night..as I heard them howling while we fixed up a few odds and ends in the goat pen in preparation for the new babies due this week and next!

      6. I suggest not trying to hug the coyotes

  3. It also sounds like you were far from the nearest coffee shop, at times during your journey. This is cause for concern. I’m glad you reached your destination and all went well.

    1. We were far from any coffee shop which was concerning lol
I saw one in the small city we went to though 🙂

  4. What a wonderful share, brother! Oh, Matt…I better not share all my “lost” moments hiking, traveling, etc…I’m old-fashioned and rely on paper maps and an atlas,…yet, there WERE times some of us in our hiking tribe didn’t want me to use them. Lol. Like a survival weekend in the woods. I’m so happy you all made it your destination! And what a beautiful parallel to the Holy Spirit being our guide. I’m so happy that by choosing God as my GPS I’ll not get lost going “home”! God bless you!
