As we go through this life that is filled with uncertainty, troubles, and difficulty, we all need reassurance from God that he is with us and working in our lives.
John the Baptist is the one who identified Jesus to the crowd of people saying, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” John the Baptist is the man who baptized people calling them to repentance and while doing so seeing the religious leaders called them brood of vipers. He is the man who called out the king for his sin.
But as he was sitting in a jail cell and soon to be executed for calling out the king, he sought reassurance. He sent his disciples to Jesus to ask if Jesus is the one. It is recorded in Matthew 11:2-3.
When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
Jesus’s response gave John the Baptist reassurance. Jesus did not shame him for needing it. Jesus sympathized with him. Matthew 11:4-5:
Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.“

My pastor likes to remind us that God only expects us to be human and to need him. God knows we need him. God knows our weakness. God knows we need reassurance.
It is interesting to note that Matthew 11 starts with John the Baptist seeking reassurance and ends with Jesus saying in Matthew 11:28-30:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus invites us into his presence to be given rest and yes reassurance.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
