Elise is seven years old, soon to be eight, and will be in third grade this fall. She comes to New Breath with her mom. Yesterday while her mom was rehearsing with the worship group, Elise was sitting in the small lobby area working on her art project, so I sat down and talked with her.
She needed scissors but confided in me that she was scared to walk back to the room that was dark. I asked her if she wanted me to walk back there with her and she nodded her head yes.

We walked back to the room, I turned on the light and told her don’t worry I was with her. She found the scissors smiling and we returned to the lobby where she finished her paper doll.
For her it was a big scary thing to go to the room on her own, but when I went with her, she felt more confident. For me it was a little thing to do. I just wanted to reassure a child.
I reflected on why God tells us not to be afraid, to have courage like he did with Israel when Joshua was leading them in Joshua 1:9.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
And like God’s promise in Isaiah 41.
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
The reason God gives to have courage and not be afraid is that God goes with us. All of the big things for us, like walking in the dark room for little Elise, are little things for God. God created the universe. As Jesus said of himself he has all power. Nothing is impossible for God.
Dear reader whatever difficulty you face, God faces it with you.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
