Christmas is only one week away and I am looking forward to celebrating Christmas Eve Service at my church and Christmas Day service at the Ukrainian church. For me it is so important to keep the focus on Jesus since he is after all, the reason we celebrate Christmas.

I realize it is popular to tell children Santa is coming and there are cute kids programs about Santa who is a fictional character. So I thought I would compare/contrast Jesus and the fictional character Santa.

Jesus is the truth. John 14:6 Jesus said-“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Santa is fictional make believe.

In songs about Santa, children are told Santa is coming to town, so they had better be good if they want their presents not a lump of coal. So children are told receiving goodies from Santa is dependent on them being good.

Jesus is God’s gift to us even though we are sinners. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Romans 5:8 says, But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

The gifts Santa brings, actually bought by parents or someone else, are temporary and the shine of the new gifts fades. The gift of eternal life that Jesus gives is something that no one can take away from us. And though we begin to enjoy our eternal life the moment we come to faith in Jesus, 1st Corinthians 2:9 says, “However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him.” In other words, the best is definitely yet to come for those who believe in Jesus.

Those are just a few comparison/contrasts begging the question of what do we focus on in our lives this Christmas, the secular celebration with a focus on a fictional character or on Jesus our Savior who died for us even though we are sinners?

Hope your week is blessed as we approach Christmas.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. Matt, this is a beautiful and wise post! Like you, I want to keep my focus on the birth of our Savior who gives the gift of life! I appreciate how you compared the two and the fact the gift of Jesus never fades. Merry Christmas, brother. Keep spreading the good news. I pray for good health as we celebrate our Savior’s birth.

    1. Thank you little sister. This life fades but our eternal home with Jesus will never fade.

      1. Amen! You’re welcome brother.💚🎄🙏🏻

  2. Matt, my time with your posts is always well-spent. The focus on the Gospel brings much encouragement to my own faith journey. May this Christmas share the mystery and wonder always found in a Bethlehem manger.

    1. Thank you Richard. May your Christmas be blessed

  3. I always told my children at an early age Jesus is the reason for Christmas and that there is NO Santa claus. Jesus is the giver of gifts.

When you rearrange the word Santa it spells satan!!!

    1. Jesus is the only reason for Christmas. Your children are blessed that you are their mom 🙂

  4. Jesus is my focus too. He is the greatest gift for all of us

  5. Nice comparisons. And another one that just hit me. Is that the same way children reach an age where they have to grow up and realize Santa is not real. We have to constantly grow up in our faith in Jesus. And leave behind our old ways and accept the truths He offers us.

    1. Yes our growth in our relationship with Jesus is constant. He is eternal so we have so much to benefit from him

  6. Great post, Matt…the Santa stuff sounds fun and cute and all that But I never want kids to then doubt Jesus’ authenticity once they find out Santa isn’t real…we’ve decorated etc with Santa but I made sure my kids knew from an early age he was for fun plus we had a book (Saint Nicholas: The Real Story of the Christmas Legend) that gives a good storyline of how the Santa character came about but also points to the story of God’s love!!

    1. Your children are blessed to have you for their mom 🙂
