Saturday Morning with My Ukrainian Friends

The experience of a refugee is one of mixed emotions. There is the excitement of discovery at times in their new country. They have stress trying to make sense of their new lives. They also grieve what they have lost. Being a refugee means experiencing loss, loss of friends and loved ones, loss of identity, loss of home and more.

This morning in my group at the Ukrainian church, it was evident that one of the women was having a down moment. So I talked about how one of my main rules is that my class is a safe place and their feelings are important. In a small way it helps them with their sense person hood.

We read from Matthew 11:28-30:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

We talked about how Jesus invites us to come to him and share everything with him including our sorrow.

Then I played What A Beautiful Name in English and then in Ukrainian from YouTube. What a blessing it is that Jesus who has all power invites us to come to him and that he knows our names and life stories.

Whatever you are experiencing, Jesus wants to hear from you.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
