For Unto Us- Eternal Father

This short series based on Isaiah 9:6 began with For Unto Us-The Birth of Jesus Foretold 700 Years Before, explored Jesus as our wonderful counselor in For Unto Us- And He Shall Be Called Wonderful Counselor, and Jesus as Might God in For Unto Us- Mighty God.

For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given,
    and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Today we look at Everlasting Father. At first glance one might confuse what it means when Isaiah refers to the promised one being called everlasting father. There are clearly three distinct persons in the Trinity, but that is revealed in the New Testament 700 years after Isaiah was written.

Isaiah refers to the promised one as everlasting in Isaiah 57. It is the same language as everlasting in Isaiah 9:6.

For this is what the high and exalted One says—
    he who lives forever, whose name is holy:

Isaiah reveals the promised one as being eternal. Yet he would not have understood the full meaning.

Jesus revealed himself as being eternal in John 8 when he revealed he existed before Abraham.

“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

John reveals that Jesus is our creator in John 1 and that Jesus is God:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made

Jesus came to show us the Father. In John 14 he told Philip.

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

In John 10 Jesus clearly talks of the Father as being a different person than Jesus and yet they live in perfect unity.

My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.  I and the Father are one.

Jesus is our Creator and Savior. Yes, he is God the Son. God the Father is a separate person, but Jesus and the Father have existed in perfect unity which is the meaning of one in John 10. Jesus being God the Son has fatherly feelings for us. He called the disciples- My Children- in John 13.

My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

Jesus being our Creator and Savior is fatherly towards us. He is eternal. So he is called Everlasting Father in Isaiah 9.

Jesus made a wonderful promise in John 14:

I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

He will never abandon us. He is always with us. He has fatherly feelings towards us. He is our Creator and Savior.
